At Blyss Nutrition we are dedicated to bringing you the highest quality vitamins that we can. For us, this means not using excipients that we don’t feel are necessary. An excipient is an inert ingredient used during the manufacturing process.
Many vitamin companies will use Magnesium Stearate as an excipient when they produce supplements. Manufacturers like to use it as it speeds up production time, and reduces their costs, and they want the production process to be as efficient as possible. Magnesium stearate is used in manufacturing as a flowing agent, which means that it helps to stop the ingredients in a tablet, capsule or powder from sticking to one another, as well as to the manufacturing equipment. But in order for it to do so, the magnesium stearate seems to change the physical properties of the powder it is added to.
There are some issues that have been raised about Magnesium stearate possibly affecting the dissolution of vitamins[1]. It has been found that even as little as one percent can significantly affect the way your body is able to break down a nutrient, as it is thought to partially coat the ingredients, making it harder for the body to dissolve. This may make the nutrients in the vitamin harder to absorb, which defeats the purpose of taking a vitamin in the first place. It is extremely important to us that you are able to extract the nutrients from our supplements, and we want you to get the most out of them that you can. As we are not 100% convinced that Magnesium stearate doesn’t affect the dissolution of a nutrient, we prefer not to use it as our flow agent.
There is also a question mark around the safety of Magnesium stearate, and some gaps have been found in the existing data. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDA)[2] for Magnesium Stearate lists a number of concerns, including irritation to the respiratory system, eyes and skin. It also says that “the toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated”. Due to the lack of conclusive toxicology and safety data, and the fact that it is of no health benefit to you, we choose to use L-Leucine for our flowing agent instead of Magnesium stearate, and as we are able to produce top quality supplements in this manner, we will continue to do so indefinitely.
